There’s a streaming service for everything nowadays, and anime is no exception. While you may find some of the more mainstream ones like Death Note and Naruto there, Crunchyroll is where you’ll find the real gold. Crunchyroll offers over a 1000 anime, it’s probably the best place to get your binge on, although the availability of some anime is subject to regional restrictions.

At any rate, if you’re thinking of introducing your kids to anime, you’ll be looking for some parental controls on Crunchyroll. Most anime are quite mature and unsuitable for kids, and if you’ve watched your fair sure of them, you know very well what we’re talking about. Therefore, let’s get down to it.

What are Parental Controls?

Netflix offers a “Kids” account in place of parental controls | Netflix

Parental controls are a configuration, available on most streaming service sites, that restrict potentially mature content. Usually, this means content containing sexual content, extremely violent acts, gore, etc. Most of us watch shows via streaming services, due to their diverse content library and watching on demand ability.

And naturally, that means that most of the cartoons and other shows targeted towards children are also available on these streaming services. But these are mixed in with the mature content, and there is a need for a suitable filter that will restrict the mature content. That’s where parental controls come in, and with this option, you can rest assured that your child won’t be able to access any content not meant for them.

Parental Controls on Crunchyroll Competitors

Crunchyroll has the biggest library of anime out of every streaming service. However, that doesn’t mean that it has all of them. You can most probably find an anime Crunchyroll is missing on Hulu, Netflix, Max or HIDIVE.

HIDIVE is the only other anime-based streaming service other than Crunchyroll | HIDIVE

HIDIVE is another anime streaming service, but it doesn’t have much in the way of exclusives. Still, it also has parental controls available, but you might find that even more titles are restricted when using an iOS device, due to Apple‘s mature content policy.

Netflix, Max and Hulu are generally known for their TV shows that have highly mature content, they have the option to set up exclusive Kids profiles, that filter out the mature content and allow children to accessible to suitable shows and movies.

Conclusion

Anime tends to have slightly mature content, no matter what kind of filter you use. Honestly speaking, you would have to restrict around 90% of anime to find the ones that were completely kid-friendly. But that’s part of growing up. If you’re confident that your kids are mature enough to get past the mature content, you can introduce them to some wonderful fiction. After all, which one of us didn’t watch movies too violent for our age growing up?

FAQs

The Nintendo Switch was released in March 2017 as the successor to the Nintendo 3DS; more than 7 years ago. While Nintendo has said they will announce a successor to the Switch next year, it still going to be a long wait. Thankfully, Nintendo is still keeping us pre-occupied with new game releases on the Switch.

One thing’s for sure; the Switch has a great game lineup. First-party exclusives, ports of popular franchises, and delightful indie releases; all combine to create one of the most diverse game libraries any console could hope for. That’s why many PC gamers want to emulate the Nintendo Switch; because the exclusives are just so good. So if you’re one of those gamers, you must’ve come across the name Ryujinx.

The Ryujinx emulator is one of oldest Switch emulators

What is the Ryujinx Emulator?

Ryujinx is an opensource emulator developed to run Switch games. First released in February 2018, Ryujinx could initially just run a few homebrew apps and just one game. Now, Ryujinx is able to run approximately 3400 Switch games. Ryujinx is completely free and available for Windows, macOS, and Linux based systems.

The State of Switch Emulation

The Switch is still receiving new releases to this day. And since no emulator can ever be a perfect copy of the device it’s trying to emulate, that means that no new game will work on an emulator right off the bat. Thankfully, Switch emulation has come a long way and now it takes around a month and a half to run a new release without any major issues.

Nonetheless, Ryujinx being an emulator for a current generation console has to put up with a lot of issues. This applies to newer and older games alike, since older can games receive updates for bug fixes and the like. Therefore, you have to make sure to keep the emulator up-to-date to avoid running into problems. If you do run into one, you can consult Ryujinx’s compatibility page on GitHub.

How To Play Games on the Ryujinx Emulator

While Ryujinx may emulate Switch games, which don’t demand as much beefy hardware than the average AAA-tier game nowadays, that doesn’t mean that you can slack off on the requirements for running the emulator on your setup. Ryujinx is by no means close to being as perfect as an emulator can get, and that means that it will require decent hardware to run Switch games on your system.

↪ Requirements and Prerequisites for Ryujinx

Before running Ryujinx, you need to satisfy some conditions:

  • Your “prod.keys” and either your dumped firmware or game cartridge untrimmed XCI
  • Your dumped Nintendo Switch games or homebrew
  • Windows 10.0.17134 or higher / macOS 12 / Any modern Linux distribution
NOTE: Extracting your firmware, extracting the “prod.keys” file and extracting your games from the Switch and its cartridges, goes beyond the scope of this article. For further information on this refer to the Ryujinx setup guide or YouTube tutorials.

Additionally, these are the hardware requirements for running Ryujinx:

↪ Running Ryujinx on Windows

Once you’ve fulfilled the requirements mentioned above, it’s time to install Ryujinx and finally get your Switch games running on your setup.

Ryujinx vs. Competitors

Up until March 2024, Ryujinx faced fierce competition from Yuzu, another free and open-source emulator. When compared side-by-side, both had their own set of advantages and disadvantages and ultimately it came down to user preference. That is until, Nintendo decided to move against Yuzu for copyright infringement in the form of a lawsuit.

For now, Ryujinx is the only worthwhile Switch emulator under active development

Naturally, the developers of Yuzu couldn’t hope to win this case and reached an agreement with Nintendo to stop development on Yuzu, in exchange for not being fined. Everyone jumped ship to Ryujinx and it’s been smooth sailing since. Yuzu still lives on (unofficially on the Internet), but since it hasn’t been updated since March 2024, it can’t ruin the most recent titles.

That’s where the Yuzu clones come in. Since Yuzu was open-source, many people copied the code before it was taken down and proceeded to upload multiple clones. Amongst the clones, Sudachi was able to stand out as the successor to Yuzu. Unfortunately, even Sudachi isn’t immune to Nintendo’s attacks and recently, it’s been shut down due to copyright infringement by, you guessed it, Nintendo.

Conclusion

While Sudachi and Yuzu may have shut down due to legal action taken by Nintendo, it doesn’t mean that emulators are illegal. Ryujinx still standing amongst all these takedowns is testament to that fact. However, it is common knowledge that emulators are mostly used to hide the dirt of pirated games. So make sure to buy your games and stay on the right side of the law!

A newly discovered Facebook bug has exposed private photos of nearly 6.8 million users. From September 12th to September 25th, the bug caused some third-party apps to gain access to several private user photos. Today, Facebook announced that they have fixed the bug and detailed the event in a blog post.

“We believe this may have affected up to 6.8 million users and up to 1,500 apps built by 876 developers,” explains the company. “The only apps affected by this bug were ones that Facebook approved to access the photos API and that individuals had authorized to access their photos.”

Bug

As long as the user permits it, Facebook allows third-party apps to access their timeline photos. As a result of the bug, third-party apps were able to access non-public photos without permission. Facebook says that developers were able to access other photos, such as those shared on Marketplace or Facebook Stories. Photos uploaded to Facebook that weren’t posted are stored on the site, and as such, they were also impacted.

Facebook is apologizing and is taking steps to alleviate the damages by urging users to delete affected photos.

“We’re sorry this happened. Early next week we will be rolling out tools for app developers that will allow them to determine which people using their app might be impacted by this bug. We will be working with those developers to delete the photos from impacted users.”

If you see an alert on your Facebook profile, it means that you might be one of the impacted users, and should follow Facebook’s instructions to delete the affected photos. The developers have also recommended all users to double check which apps have access to their photos.

Over the past few months, there has been a significant rise in data breaches, and Facebook has been in the spotlight more than once.

The Game Boy Advance (GBA) is one of the most beloved Nintendo consoles of all time. While the cause of its popularity might be Pokémon Emerald, that doesn’t altogether mean that it was the only reason for its success. The GBA was known for its expansive and memorable library of games, portability and relative expansiveness.

So, if you’re looking to relive the nostalgia of some Pokémon games, you’ve probably heard of emulators. Emulators are applications that can help you run retro games on the device of your choosing. And for the GBA, there are lots of emulators to choose from. Fortunately for you, we’re here to help you out and choose the best GBA emulator.

The Game Boy Advance is one of Nintendo’s most legendary consoles | Wikipedia

The Current State of Game Boy Advance Emulation

Before we move on to which emulators are the best ones out there, let’s discuss the state of GBA emulation. The Game Boy Advance was first released back in June 2001. However, you’ll be surprised to know that emulators for the GBA were available in 2000. Yes indeed, that means they were around a year before the console’s actual release. But that doesn’t mean that they were functional.

GBAEmu is the first emulator developed for the GBA

The development may have started back in 2000, but it was only after the consoles release that they were able to run any games, and even those ran with graphical glitches and no sound. Since then, multiple emulators have been developed and the emulation has been perfected with nearly every emulator being able to run almost any game without hitches.

The Best GameBoy Advance Emulators

So without further ado, let’s take a look at the best GBA emulators around:

↪ Best GBA Emulator for PC platforms: Visual Boy Advance

Visual Boy Advance (VBA) was first released in 2001, and has come a long way since then. Currently, VBA supports all GBA games and is able to run them near to perfection. It offers a lot of features like controller support, cheat codes, online and local multiplayer on supported games, speed hacks and save states. It’s also very user-friendly, so you can have it running in no time.

VBA offers multiple display filters too, to give the game a more smoother look

VBA is available on all platforms; Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. However, since it’s only available on mobile platforms via RetroArch, you’d best skip out on the mobile version. VBA is also completely free and opensource. Its requirements are pretty lax, so you can run it on just about anything, including that old laptop you have from 2008.

While you may be hindered by the fact that its a paid app, you won’t find a better GBA emulator on Android. Yes, there might be a few who come close, but none can compare to My Boy!’s feature-rich setting, built-in cheat libraries, stable speed hacks and multiple save states.

Trust us; My Boy! is well worth its $4.99 price tag, and it especially beats setting up RetroArch. With My Boy!, you can just load up the game and chill out. Oh, did we forget to mention that it supports multiplayer too? So get your buds to download it too and face off in epic Pokémon battles!

Delta has been around for quite a while and has changed its shape and form several times. It is an all-in-one emulator that supports multiple consoles, including the GBA.

Delta is probably the best emulator available on the App Store right now | App Store

Delta is completely free to download on the App Store and is open-source too. However, you will need iOS 14 in order to run it on your iOS device. That said, there’s nothing better than Delta on iOS with its user-friendly interface, save state support, speed hacks, controller support and more. Unfortunately, online multiplayer is not support, although local multiplayer on the same device is supported.

Growing up, Nintendo consoles were a part of everyone’s childhoods. While the console you may have had might differ depending on your generation, there is always that one console that was so infamous everyone had to have it. For Nintendo, this was the Wii. Wii Sports, arguably the most well-known game of the Wii, propelled the console to stardom.

Another forgotten Nintendo console of that time period is the GameCube. While it wasn’t exactly popular, it did reintroduce some classics and allowed the our generation to experience fan-favorite franchises like The Legend of Zelda and Super Smash Bros. Nevertheless, if you’re looking to relive the good old days, you’re going to definitely need the Dolphin emulator.

The Dolphin emulator is a legendary emulator known by almost all PC enthusiasts

What is the Dolphin Emulator?

The Dolphin emulator is an emulator designed to run Nintendo Wii and GameCube games. It is a pretty old emulator; it was released in 2003 and was primarily intended to emulate the GameCube to preserve its games. Later the developers expanded its capabilities to emulate the Wii due to popular demand. Dolphin was always free, and became completely opensource 5 years after its initial release.

History of Wii and GameCube Emulation

The GameCube was released in September 2001 and the Wii in November 2006, nearly 5 years apart. In fact, Dolphin was the first emulator for the GameCube and after it went open-source in 2008, it also became the first and, really, the only emulator that was able to run Wii games.

The Nintendo GameCube (left) and the Nintendo Wii (right) are both emulated by Dolphin

Even today, Dolphin remains the only option for emulating the 2 consoles. Any other emulators are probably fakes or forks (modified copies) of Dolphin. At the time of writing, Dolphin is able to run almost all Wii and GameCube games perfectly.

Minecraft still has some lingering issues, even if they’re handled easily

As Nintendo looks to shift focus towards the Switch‘s unrevealed successor, let’s take a trip down memory lane and reminisce on Nintendo’s lineup of handheld consoles, specifically the Nintendo DS, more commonly referred to as DS only. The DS was released only a year before the legendary PlayStation Portable (PSP), and was a technological marvel by itself, featuring a laptop like design with dual screens.

Although the age of the DS is far gone, its outstanding game lineup, and legacy, continues to be enjoyed to this day through emulators. So, if you’re looking to relive your childhood or get a taste of what games were like in the good old days, here are the best Nintendo DS emulators in 2024.

An Overview of the Nintendo DS

Released in November 2004, the Nintendo DS sported a foldable design similar to laptops and its predecessor, the Game Boy Advance (GBA) SP. Its lid had a screen in the center, with both sides being used for speakers. The bottom half sported another screen in the center, along with a directional pad on the left side and the buttons on the right. The bottom screen had touch capabilities and even had a stylus.

The Nintendo DS is one of the most iconic handheld consoles of all time | Wikipedia

Although the DS did not possess the same versatility as the PSP, it was still a major success and remains Nintendo’s highest selling console, the best-selling handheld console and the second-best-selling console of all time. Its success can be attributed to an outstanding lineup of games like Nintendogs, Pokémon Black/White, Pokémon Black/White 2, Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow and more.

What is Emulation?

Emulation is the act of imitating of a device through the use of software, in order to run another software, that would normally be incompatible with your own device. Emulators are software used to carry out this function. For the most part, emulators exist to archive and enjoy old and retro classic game titles, but they can also be used for programming e.g. using an emulator to develop a software for another device.

The Nintendo Switch Online membership offers emulation for several iconic Nintendo consoles, but not the Nintendo DS | Nintendo

There are different emulators for every device/console. Additionally, multiple emulators may exist for the same device/console. Each emulator will yield different results, as the results are dependent on several factors; on the compatibility of the game/software being emulated, your hardware, the settings within the emulator being used, the condition of the emulator etc.

The Nintendo Switch itself offers emulation through its Nintendo Switch Online membership, but there’s no way to play DS games through the subscription as of yet. Hence, we have to make use of these emulators made by fans to enjoy some classics.

The State of Nintendo DS Emulation

The Nintendo DS is a console from 2004, and at the time of writing, it is nearly two decades old. Moreover, true to the nature of Nintendo’s games, the DS did not have particularly powerful hardware and did not feature many 3D games, unlike its rival the PSP, which featured many games with amazing graphics at that time.

Pokémon Black/White 2’s 2.5D environment was much admired amongst the fans

Many Nintendo DS games, like Pokémon Black/White 2, featured a hybrid 2.5D art style. Therefore, the DS isn’t particularly hard to emulate and since the developers of the emulators have had a lot of time to work on their respective emulators, they’ve been able to run every, or almost every, DS game from the start till the end successfully without any errors.

The Best Nintendo DS Emulators

Without further ado, let’s take a look at the best Nintendo DS emulators out there:

1. DeSmuME

Platforms: Windows, Mac, iPhone, Android

DeSmuME is a pretty old emulator, but it’s got the experience to show for it | DeSmuME

If you don’t mind the weird name, DeSmuME might be the best DS emulator ever. It is, by definition, the closest to perfection an emulator can get, as it is able to play nearly every DS game from start to finish without any issues. It’s also really easy to use and well-optimized, working on old PCs wonderfully. DeSmuME is compatible with Windows, macOS, and Linux systems.

Aside from its perfection, DeSmuME also has its own features to enhance your DS gaming experience; graphics upscaling, speed hacks, save slots, a cheat code manager, screen recorder and screenshot capabilities. It’s open-source too. The only downside of DeSmuME would be that it has no WiFi/multiplayer capabilities, which can be quite a pain as some games require it to work.

2. DraStic DS Emulator

Platforms: Android

Over a decade old, and yet none can rival DraStic on Android when it comes to DS emulation | DraStic

Our Android buddies have nothing to worry about as we haven’t forgotten about them. The DraStic DS Emulator is the best DS emulator on the Google Play Store. Although it was a paid app on its release more than a decade ago, the developers, Exophase, made it a free app a while back in response to Nintendo’s lawsuit against the developers of Yuzu, a Switch emulator.

At any rate, DraStic is the best DS emulator as it is compatible with most Android phones, and also compatible with most DS games too. It plays them effortlessly, even on budget 5-year-old Android phones. Aside from that, it offers many features like graphic filters, speed hacks, entering cheat codes, built-in cheats for popular games and more.

3. Delta

Platforms: iPhone, iPad

Delta is a well-known and trusted DS emulator | Delta

Following the EU‘s decision to allow emulators on Apple‘s App Store, iPhone and especially iPad owners no longer have to resort to jailbreaking to install emulators on their devices. Recently, Delta, an old face to veteran jailbreakers, made its way on to the App Store. To run Delta, you’ll need to have at least iOS 14 on your device. Other than that, the emulation is not very resource-intensive, so it should be a breeze.

For those who don’t know Delta is a well-known GBA emulator, and upon its official release on the App Store, has included support for Nintendo 64, Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) and several other retro consoles. It is fully open-source and has a user-friendly interface, save state support, speed hacks, controller support and more.

Unfortunately, online multiplayer is not support, although local multiplayer on the same device is supported.

4. melonDS

Platforms: Windows, Linux, macOS, Android (unoffical)

melonDS is probably the only DS emulator to support Wi-Fi multiplayer | melonDS

melonDS is a fairly recent project when compared to the other emulators on this list. While it may lack the features found in DeSmuME and might not be as well optimized, its still a pretty solid emulator. Oh and there’s also the fact that it also supports Wi-Fi multiplayer. Yup, that’s right; melonDS might be the only emulator on this list to support online multiplayer.

melonDS is completely open-source and supports a wide variety of platforms; Windows, Linux, macOS and even an unofficial Android port. Aside from Wi-Fi multiplayer, melonDS also supports multiple save states, speed hacks, cheats and more. It may not offer the same level of performance as DeSmuME, but since it has Wi-Fi multiplayer, it’s definitely worth checking out.

5. RetroArch

Platforms: Everything (no joke)

RetroArch is the go-to solution for many, but definitely not beginners | RetroArch

RetroArch may be the most well-known emulator on this list, as it is one of the most well-known emulators out there. The best part is that RetroArch by itself isn’t even an emulator; it uses cores or engines from other emulators to provide an all-in-one emulator solution. Therefore, you might see several different cores for the same console. It is fully open-source too.

At any rate, RetroArch is pretty much a universal emulator and is available across all major platforms; Windows, Linux, macOS, iOS, Android. For the DS, it uses DeSmuME’s core so you can be sure that its going to have no problems in terms of performance. It also features speed hacks, cheats, save states and controller support. The only downside is that RetroArch is pretty un-user-friendly and its interface leaves much to be desired.

Emulation and Piracy

The Nintendo DS is nearly 20 years old and even though its classics continue to be enjoyed to this day through these emulators, it’s important to remember that emulation itself not piracy. However, the method of obtaining the games for emulation is mostly done through illegal means, even more so when you have no way to legally purchase the games anymore, like for the DS.

You can find old DS games in thrift stores or eBay or other similar stores | eBay

That’s not to say you’re fresh out of luck though. There are always people selling their old games on places like eBay and other similar stores. Therefore, make sure to stay on the right side of the law and get your games from someone who’s already owned them or borrow them.

Is Lesser Restoration Worth Keeping?

While Lesser Restoration is a simple enough spell and can come in handy on various occasions, it becomes more and more obsolete as you progress through the game. That’s because you can find several items that can grant you immunity, or at the very least, high resistance to disease, poison, paralysis, blindness and bloodless. Shadowheart, a NPC who can become your ally, is a Cleric and can also use it.

Shadowheart, a Cleric, can also cast Lesser Restoration | Baldur’s Gate 3 Wiki

However, if you plan on keeping Astarion around and romancing him, it can be worth it. Still, with the Amulet of Silvanus, it seems less important, especially since you can get the Amulet quite early in the game. At any rate, the decision rests with you, so make your decision based on the information we’ve provided and get back in the game!
